It can be used as one of the markers for very long-chain (in ratio to tetradecanoylcarnitine) VLCADD or medium-chain (in ratio to octanoyl-L-carnitine) MCADD with acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. According to studies may be elevated in cardiovascular disease risk and type 2 diabetes.
